Soil Assessment Cone Penetrometer (SACP)

The LabQuip Soil Assessment Cone Penetrometer (SACP or MEXE Probe) is a lightweight instrument for rapidly measuring in-depth resistance to penetration, indicating with a dial, in terms of California Bearing Ratio (CBR).

Developed in conjunction with the UK Ministry of Defence, the Mexe probe is a robust and reliable instrument used throughout the world by both commercial and military establishments.

  • Measurement range for CBR is from 0-15% CBR.
  • Soil trafficability measurements can be made using the Cone Index (CI) range.
  • The linear CI range is from 0-300 and has 60 divisions, each of 11.12N (1.13kgf). Full deflection is 667N (67.9kgf).
  • Steady penetration of the cone into the soil is required and readings are taken from the dial at 75mm (3”) intervals during penetration to a maximum depth of 600mm (24”).
  • In fine-grained soils, for which the SACP is primarily intended, measurements correlate closely with CBR values, measured in-situ with conventional equipment.
  • The Mexe probe is supplied complete with carrying case, which contains one CBR cone, one CI cone, one top rod, three extension rods (150mm each), tools and operating instructions.

LabQuip Limited is now pleased to announce the acquisition of the licence to manufacture supply and calibrate the Soils Assessment Cone Penetrometer (SACP) or MEXE probe.

The SACP has been supplied by CNS Farnell for a number of years, once they were acquired by Proceq of Switzerland the future of the Mexe probe had been uncertain.

We can now announce that the supply, manufacture, repair and calibration of the Mexe probe is to be brought back to the UK.

This is great news for customers that may have had problems with recalibration and repairs over the last few months LabQuip are committed to ensuring that the Mexe probe will continue to be available as a simple to use robust instrument for measuring on-site CBR.

It can be used to obtain in-situ bearing strengths that can be correlated with lab tests and is primarily intended for fine grained soils where the bearing strength can be taken for trafficability or for load bearing capacity.

Two different area 30 degree cones are provided. One is used for CBR and the second for cone index testing.

In use the device is placed vertically on the surface to be tested with the operator standing square to and above the instrument. A steady force is than applied forcing the probe into the soil. Readings are taken from a graduated scale every 75mm in terms of CBR or Cone Index. Scale is graduated 0-15% CBR and 0-300 Cone Index.

The complete kit includes a cone index and CBR 30 degree cone, 4-150mm extension rods marked at 75mm, 2–spanner wrenches, head assembly with graduated scale and folding handle, carrying case and operating instructions.

Weight including case is 5.5 lb (2.5kg).
